Addressing student mental health on World Mental Health Day
Empowering students for improved mental health on World Mental Health Day
In the past, mental health was often overlooked due to cultural values and traditions, but today, it's a pressing concern. Many people, however, still lack awareness about this crucial topic.
While people are starting to recognize and seek help for mental health issues, there's still a significant gap in awareness. The rise in student suicides is particularly alarming and requires careful attention.
Student suicides are influenced by various factors, including socio-cultural changes, handling failure, unrealistic expectations, academic and social pressures, difficulties in relationships, identity crises, bullying, loss of loved ones, financial constraints, substance abuse, stress, anxiety, and more. These issues have created a pressing need for mental health support in schools.
Government initiatives
The Ministry of Education has introduced UMEED guidelines for schools to prevent student suicides. The guidelines aim to dispel myths about mental health, help identify warning signs of suicide, and encourage support systems within schools.

The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes mental health and well-being in students' lives, with a core belief that "Every Child Matters." It promotes sensitivity, understanding, and support for self-harm incidents.
The role of technology
Modern technology has changed the way children interact, with many spending excessive time on gadgets and social media. This shift can lead to loneliness, low self-esteem, and difficulty focusing.
Schools must take responsibility for students' mental health by providing dedicated faculty and regular assessments. They should also conduct tailored workshops and offer one-on-one counseling when needed.
